Loop
![]() (they/them) An ethereal being of infinite starlight, sent by the Universe to be a helpful guide. Chatty, sarcastic and mysterious. Background (spoilers for In Stars And Time)Siffrin, a Traveller with no home they could remember, once joined a party of heroes to stop an evil King and save the country of Vaugarde from being frozen in time. After countless battles and trials, they acquired the items necessary to unlock the House that the King had locked himself in. They prepared themselves for the final battle, for their journey to finally come to an end.About three rooms into the House, Siffrin was tragically crushed by a large boulder. But this was not the end of his journey. Siffrin quickly learned that, somehow, he had been caught in a timeloop. He used it to his advantage, navigating the House's maze of rooms and traps, returning to the day before every time he died. He kept his new power a secret, not wanting to trouble his allies with the possibility of failure. Eventually, through many attempts, they were able to reach the top floor of the House, to finally face the King once and for all. Their party was thoroughly, ruthlessly defeated. They never stood a chance against the King. The gap in strength was simply too large. But the timeloop did not end, so there must have been a reason for it. Siffrin tried, again and again, to defeat the King. Every attempt was a failure. He learned to manipulate the loop, to only skip back to the start of the final floor. He fought countless monsters to build his own strength and the strength of their party. Again and again, they still failed. But he had no choice but to continue, to start again, even knowing their battle was hopeless. He lost more and more of himself, forgetting events that happened before the loop began, even forgetting the names of his friends and allies. Trapped repeating the same hopeless scenario, unwilling to confide in anyone, he came to resent what he once thought of as a gift. Eventually, something changed. Siffrin started to crack—just enough for his friends to notice, to try and cheer him up before the final battle. And for whatever reason, this was what finally changed the results in their favour. Their party was able to defeat the King by the skin of their teeth, and at his most desperate hour, Siffrin was able to recall the names of his friends. As they stood at the top of the House, celebrating their victory, time rewound to the beginning once more. Siffrin's resolve broke. He had hinged everything on defeating the King, something that already had felt impossible for far too long, only to learn that it was somehow unrelated to his timeloop problem. Hopeless, desperate, he made a final plea to the Universe: he wished for someone, anyone, to help him. His prayers were answered. Siffrin was stripped of his humanity, transformed into an ethereal being and planted right back into the timeloop... of a different Siffrin. Now calling themselves "Loop", they crafted themselves a new personality to fulfill their role as Siffrin's helper, to try and find a way to overcome the timeloop and escape—if not for themselves, or their other self, then at least for the ones they once called their friends. Physical DetailsThey have a spiky glowing ball for a head, let's get the obvious one out of the way. The head itself doesn't feel entirely solid. You could probably pass a hand through the outer "spikes", and trying to dig into the centre will eventually meet some resistance (assuming Loop doesn't stop them from doing that, kind of rude tbh). Gets uncomfortably warm in the middle, like you'd expect from a tiny star.Their only facial feature is a pair of eyes—the left eye is slightly lighter than the right. Their height is 5'2". The rest of their body is solid black and dotted with twinkling stars that slowly shift around. Yes, they walk around buck-ass naked. There is nothing down there. Their body is smooth, hairless, missing details like nipples and fingernails, etc. The edges of their body sometimes fizzles into little spikes, not unlike their head. At the centre of their chest is a large four-pointed star. Touching it feels warmer than the rest of their body, and it pulses similar to a heartbeat. Their build is lean, but muscular. A very thin but surprisingly strong stick. Internally, they lack organs and all logic kind of goes out the window. There's a semblance of bones and muscles, but they probably look weird as hell under an x-ray. Their blood is red with a sparkly shimmer to it. No mouth, no need to eat. No lungs, though they can still "suffocate" if their star-head is smothered or submerged for an extended period. They have a healing factor comparable to a regular human's, and grievous injuries can still kill them if left untreated. "Bones" can be "broken", etc. Their body smells strongly of sugar, shifting closer to a burnt caramel when overusing their abilities. Voice, Writing & MannerismsVA: Brendan BlaberDespite the lack of a mouth, they are very good at smiling with their eyes. Mainly because they insist on putting on an incessantly cheerful front at all times. Lots of practise! They play with their hands a lot when talking, kind of like they're not sure what to do with them. They radiate sparkling lights at all times, but the sparkles increase and decrease along with their mood. When they're angry or upset they have very few sparkles. When they're happy they have larger and more numerous sparkles. Their head can also "flare out" when they're especially angry, like a giant living sparkler. They're weird about eye contact. A lot of the time they'll lock eyes with people like it's some kind of challenge, but when they're uncomfortable or upset they avoid it like the plague. So it's more like they try to overcompensate for their issues with eye contact by doing a lot of eye contact whenever they're confident enough to stare people down. Kind of unsettling. They also have a weird habit of ducking their head down when they want to hide, even though there's nothing for them to hide their face behind. Don't worry about it. They have a strong negative reaction to physical contact of any kind. Even just bumping into them will make them jump, and they're likely to flinch away from forward attempts to touch them. They are not strictly averse to touch, and will sometimes push through their own reactions to allow or initiate it, but it's an instinctual response from them. Their handwriting is slow, neat, and (of course!) very loopy. They seem to put a lot of effort into it! When upset or in a hurry, it's significantly more messy and plain, though. They like to doodle little stars in the margins. Rarely, they will animate their doodles with Craft to make them twinkle and move on the page. They can copy Siffrin's handwriting very effectively. Great for when they want to mess with him! AbilitiesThe magic of their world is known as Craft. Loop can use all three primary types of Craft, as well as a weak form of healing Craft. Their specialty is Piercing type attacks. They have knowledge of forbidden Crafts, allowing them to rewind time for themselves upon death. This ability triggers automatically. Due to their nature as a star-like being, they can only rewind the state of their own physical body, not the rest of the world around them. Using this power creates a strong burnt caramel scent in the air. Their role as Siffrin's helper grants them additional powers unique to them. They're capable of spying on him remotely and speaking telepathically to him at any time, whether he likes it or not, though there is a range limit to it. They can also grant anyone the ability to speak telepathically back by teaching them the secret Call hand sign. Telepathic communication can be used by anyone with at least one hand, but only allows them to speak directly to Loop. They are an agent of the Universe, and as such they are granted certain knowledge that they have absolutely no explanation for. They simply Know some things, for convenience. They are also designed to be easily controlled by the will of the Universe, making them especially susceptible to mind control. Spiritual (spoilers for In Stars And Time)In general, they're not very good at masking their mind or aura from observant individuals. There's a strong impression that they're still not used to their current form, or that they're unaware of what sorts of weird vibes they might be giving off. They're new at this, please be patient with them.Loop's body is formed entirely of star magic, essentially, with only a faint trace of humanity left in them. Those sensitive to the divine may recognize it as a god-granted transformation. They are, in a sense, an agent of their god, similar in role to an angel or saint. They are not actually a "star", but they did absorb one to become what they now are, so it may be possible to mistake them for another world's brand of star-people. To those sensitive to time manipulation, they have very obviously been stuck in a timeloop for way too long and still retain a natural ability to loop back on death. This power is weaved into their very existence, rather than the temporary gift it once was. In turn, they are likely to sense people who have also brushed with time travel, though they might not realize it at first. To those who can see the soul in a more abstract sense... Loop has been severely damaged by their experiences, crushed past the breaking point and then rebuilt from the pieces left behind. They are still broken, and still feel broken, in many different ways. They hurt a lot more than they like to let on. If seen alongside Siffrin, it would be painfully obvious that they were once the same person, though have since grown in different directions. Empaths would probably find them unbearably depressing to be around. Sorry empaths, they're perpetually doing Bad. Surface memories read without issue. Attempting to read past memories is... complicated. Their mind is full of holes, but it's the kind of hole caused by Unknowable Horrors where if you try to look at it you get a headache until you stop. Or you keep trying and start bleeding from the nose until your head explodes, I guess, but maybe don't do that. What isn't full of holes is crystal-clear, as if certain key memories from the past year or so have been polished to a shine by a higher entity. These memories are also weirdly resistant to any sort of memory-manipulation, again thanks to interference from some unseen higher entity that has a stake in Loop remembering things. Unfortunately for Loop, this protection doesn't apply to anything past their canon memories.
